The Next

I'm back in London from Kazakhstan. It's been great being there and seeing many new things. More pictures will follow. But for now I'm planning what to do next. There are three routes I am considering. The first one would be to do a postgraduate course. I haven't applied to the Watford course, neither to Falmouth one. My application went all the way up north to Sweden, to Hyper Island where I applied for the Interactive Art Director course.

It's a one year course for people with work experience to dive in into interactive media. I think combining this with my former studies in design and creative advertising makes a lot of sense. So far I've passed the first application stage and I've been invited to the admission days in Stockholm next week.

The other more than interesting thing is W+K's Platform. Wieden+Kennedy is opening their own creative school for 12 people for six up to nine months. The deadline for this is in two weeks (3rd of July) so right now I'm working on an entry. Remembering my friends participation in the W+Kside application process, I know that there is going to be fierce competition from all around the globe for spaces on this program. I'll do my best to get a shot – how great would that be?

The third option is a direct one, looking for a new creative partner and get a first placement and turn it into a permanent job. Tough, but possible, it's just about finding someone who fits. So if you know anyone looking for an art director, send an email my way – write (at) creativeinlondon (dot) co (dot) uk

Share your thoughts with me on those things, I was considering Watford but many of you told me that agency experience is way more valuable, which I agree to. Thus Hyper Island, most of the time they teach at agencies and there are great work placements available. But to be completely honest, I'd prefer to stay in London and finally start off in a permanent position here.

"looking for a new creative partner and get a first placement and turn it into a permanent job"

You gotta be joking me. I love you Wal. Never have I seen someone with so much drive and tenacity in the face of prolonged rejection. I think your brilliant and I want to hug you.

Hey Mr Wal. I was sad to find out that you and Jai had split, BUT it sounds like you are on top of things. I was gonna say that doing a post-grad course was pointless given your experience, but perhaps doing a course as specialized as Hyper Island may be a good idea. I would say that finding a new partner and cracking on with the placement thing would be what I'd do, but maybe do the Hyper Island thing and keep your fingers crossed that the industry picks up back in London. But of course, the w+k would be brilliant but a longer shot by the sounds of it. It's a tough decision, but keep smiling and look at it simply as the next stage. Come and have a chat if you like. Good luck dude.

Hyper Island sounds like a great opportunity - another country and another string to the bow could be just what you need. As Ferris said, London in a year's time should hopefully be a much better picture for creatives. All depends whether your love of London will allow you to spread your wings a little and try something new for a year. One thing's for sure - nobody can accuse you of not being a trooper throughout it all! Wish you all the best for whatever you do decide upon!

Hey Wal

Excellent decision on the Hyper Island Avenue. I think like the above comments, specialising in digital and being taught through agencies will give you a great advantage when you return.

From looking at Hyper Island website, they seem very successful and on top of the digital game.

As for WK Platform. I was going to apply myself, but its not a team thing. So its a no to leaving my poor partner for 6 months if i got on and he didn't and vice a versa.

Good luck with the next part of your journey.

Stockholm with loads of fit blonde birds. Or London with loads of twats wearing stupid glasses. Hmmm....
(You'll have to lose the c-strap if you go to Sweden though.)

You'll never get in at hyper island. You forgot to write 'sweden' on your envelope.

he/she said it 'won't' work in Sweden Wal!

when will you hear back from your application then Wal?

Best of luck to you, although I feel you're going wrong somewhere. You're a very good AD but for some reason you haven't got yourself a job (yet!)

I don't think your best plan would be to do another course. I'm confident you'll do very well at it, as you have done all your other creative courses, but come the end you'll be in pretty much the same position now.

I might add, you've got to really want to work in digital not just think, it's easier to get a job, or it's the way things are going so I best do that. I've got the perception you've quite like traditional advertising, much more so than digital.

You clearly enjoy what you do, and that'll get you a long way. If a course in Sweden is what you really want, I hope you get it.

Keep looking for a good copywriter too. If you can save yourself time studying and get in the actual ad industry, it'd be better for you.

Have you tried any of your contacts?

what about Matt? Can he help you get a placement at AKQA?

Have you actually spent time working in digital before you sprint off in that direction, not knowing if it's something you're suited to?

What's a C strap?

i think i ll know from hyper island in july after the admission days next week.

i don't want to do digital because it's 'easier' to get a job. i actually still want to work at an above the line agency but have the chance to do digital work there as well, i think hyper island is great preparation for that. i want to experiment within the interactive space, not churn out loads of banners (like we did at agency republic earlier this year).

sure i'm still looking for a writer, but it's not the easiest thing to find someone :) any help appreciated.

Is money no object in Wal-world? Just curious . . .

Money in Wal land doesn't come first. I think Erik V. said it in a good way:

Well, yes. But you must be in a very privileged position if you can afford not to work and study abroad - and surely there's the danger that the longer you study the greater the danger of being the oldest junior art director in town.

Anonymous said...

That could be a problem in itself Wal - if there's no urgency to find a job because you're comfortable enough already, then you run the risk of becoming too picky.

Granted finding a writer isn't easy, but I think that's your best bet. I'd spend time doing that myself! Go at it with an open mind and try not to be too judgemental.

Like Joe Strummer said:

You either become an authority yourself, or you get crushed.

Best of British Wal.
