Hyper Island in a Nutshell

Only 7 days of Hyper Island are left in the year of 2009. There is a huge deadline hanging above our heads, so there's no time to write up all that's happening. The Goodby, Silverstein & Partners days were great with fantastic presentations and interesting insights. We had DDB Stockholm over here this week going through their Swedish Army work and today Amsterdam Worldwide was in the house to give individual feedback on our work. I'm participating in a creative Google Wave experiment and there's a new movie created by the Digital Media 2010 class about Hyper Island which I'm sharing here.

so what do you get given instead of a degree?
Fair enough being marked on real world situations etc but if you then decided not to become a creative and a planner or something you will be expected to have some sort of qualification. I'm guessing you have to have had a degree and learnt the old way before you go, otherwise to some it will seem that it's not even as good as a btec or hnd?

when was the last time as a creative (if you are a creative) were you asked what degree you had or whether or not that affected the outcome of an interview.

Those that make those decisions will be aware of HI and a book of intelligent work set by agencies could be very appealing.

I suppose the question is, what next?

Aim for work in digital shops?

WK hired Harri and Petra off their book. They had no crazy strats or funny campaigns. They had well thought out work that looked very well executed, it is very professional and thats the way Val's work seems to be going.

Anon 12:47, I think Anon 01:50's point was, what if Wal ever decides to deviate from the creative path slightly (i.e become a Planner or Account Handler) or just change career entirely?

Outside of going for creative positions you do need a normal CV with qualifications listed to show what you've been doing over the years, or it will affect the outcome of the interview.
The course/courses he's taken would need to be listed under their official titles i.e HND, BTEC, PDD.

I know it's almost unthinkable to imagine that there could ordinary 'civillian' jobs outside of being a creative but, shock horror, there are.

I think the point is, is Wal safeguarding for the future 'just in case'....

Wal, I must admit I was skeptical when you first announced you were off to Hyper Island. I was in the 'stick at it you'll get a job soon' camp. But it seems that you're learning so much great new stuff, boosting your interactive know-how, honing and improving your skill set and meeting some really interesting and talented people along the way. I've said it before and now I'll say it again: with your keen, happy demeanour you are going places young sir. It's inspiring. Nice one.

That's right, i was just trying to ask what happens if Wal decides at some point to change into a different career or say become a planner. What qualification does hyper island give you? It may well be respected if you wan't to become a creative but in other fields you still need a degree or something of some sort. I know wal already has a degree, but what about others?

There's no 'official' degree at Hyper Island, I don't mind this at all. I don't mind that at all. It's a big part of the education, if they would introduce a degree like other universities they would have to play by their rules and establish exams, employ teachers etc. and that's just not what Hyper Island is about.
